Abarca selected Ciencia Puerto Rico as one of five nonprofit organizations, to receive a grant and volunteer support through Abarca’s Oasis Community Program 2020-21. As a beneficiary of the OCP, Ciencia Puerto Rico will expand its work through theSeeds of Success initiative. This program impacts more than 3,500 girls per year.
How Ciencia Puerto Rico’s Seeds of Success Program Supports Girls in STEM
The program helps 100 middle and high school girls explore STEM-H careers alongside “Borinqueñas,” women with distinguished careers in science, technology, math, and health. Through islandwide workshops and a mentor-guided science communication project, participants explore STEM and health fields while building leadership skills.
Ciencia Puerto Rico is a non-profit organization composed of scientists, professionals, students, and citizens committed to the advancement of science in PR. Their vision is carried out through the promotion of science communication, education, and scientific careers — their greatest resource being their extensive, diverse, and committed network of members and supporters united by a shared passion and interest in science and its impact on the future.
How Abarcans Support Ciencia Puerto Rico
The Abarcan OCP volunteer committee for this beneficiary is led by Cristina Muñoz, and mentored by Sonymarie Socarras, VP of Strategy to Execution. The core team of Abarcans also includes: Kevin Robles, Aidelissa Gutiérrez, Nayda Rivera, and Juan Mateo. The self-nominated squad will participate in leadership trainings as part of the organizational development program Abarcan Growth.
As STEM opportunities continue to grow, Abarcans recognize the value of introducing young people to science early. Through their collaboration with Ciencia PR, they are helping build a diverse future generation of STEM leaders in Puerto Rico.
