Multiple Sclerosis Awareness: Navigating Diagnosis, Care, and Support

May 29, 2020

Abarcans stand with the millions of people around the world who live with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) every day. Today, an estimated 2.9 million people worldwide live with MS, including nearly 1 million people in the United States and thousands more in Puerto Rico.

Raising awareness is an important step toward improving understanding, supporting earlier diagnosis, and helping people affected by MS access the care, resources, and community they need.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

According to the National MS Society, multiple sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts communication within the brain and between the brain and body. Symptoms vary from person to person and can sometimes be invisible to others, even when they are disabling. People living with MS may experience difficulty walking, numbness or tingling, vision problems, fatigue, and changes in memory or concentration.

What Causes MS?

The cause of the condition is still unknown, though scientists believe that a combination of environmental and genetic factors contribute to the risk of developing MS. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. There is no cure for MS, though there are several medications that can help control the varying symptoms.

World MS Day:

May 30 marks World MS Day, coordinated by the MS International Federation and its members worldwide. For 2024–2026, the World MS Day campaign theme is diagnosis, under the name My MS Diagnosis, “Navigating MS Together.” The campaign focuses on the importance of early and accurate diagnosis, while also highlighting the barriers many people face before receiving answers, support, and care.

Abarca’s participation in the MS Connections campaign is part of our Oasis Community Program, an initiative aimed at making healthcare awesome, while at the same time, supporting community organizations that make health services more accessible, and also bringing awareness to conditions affecting our communities.
