Managing stress can prevent health problems

Jun 6, 2023

Stress is one of the most common things that we as a society today deal with. People often associate stress with getting the job done, giving us a false sense of productivity, and being on top of our game. Nonetheless, having high-functioning stress or long-term stress can lead to multiple health problems and should not be taken lightly.

Not knowing how to manage or cope with stress can steer your body to developing heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and even depression. Stress can also weaken the immune system which could make you more likely to get sick, so learning to manage stress and anxiety is essential to achieving a healthy and fulfilling life.

It is vital to our well-being that we can identify when we are stressed out. Some of the symptoms of stress are feeling:

  • Worried
  • Angry
  • Irritable
  • Depressed
  • Unable to focus

Stress also affects your body. Physical signs may include:

  • Headaches
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Upset stomach
  • Rapid weight gain or loss
  • Tense muscles

Let’s begin by considering these three basic pillars of wellness and anti-stress techniques so that we can begin to practice healthier ways of living:

1. Identify Triggers: One way to cope with stress is to identify the triggers that cause it and develop strategies to manage it. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga can also help reduce stress levels. Regular exercise and healthy eating habits can improve our physical health, boost our immune system and help us better manage stress.

2. Find Support: Another critical aspect of managing stress is building a supportive network of friends and family who we can talk to and share our concerns with. Social support is vital in reducing feelings of anxiety and depression and can help us manage our emotions better. Seeking professional help from a therapist or counselor is also an effective way to address anxiety and stress-related disorders.

3. Self-care Is Key: Creating a lifestyle that prioritizes self-care can help reduce stress and improve our overall well-being. This can include taking time for hobbies and activities we enjoy, practicing good sleep hygiene, and setting boundaries to ensure we have adequate time for rest and relaxation.

By incorporating these strategies into our lives, we can reduce stress levels, improve our mental and physical health, and build resilience to manage future stressful situations effectively. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help when we need it and take the necessary steps to prioritize our well-being.
