Abarca has successfully implemented the Medicaid Drug Rebate Program (MDRP) for Puerto Rico.
MDRP is a federal program designed to offset the Federal and state costs of outpatient prescription drugs for Medicaid patients — approximately 780 drug manufacturers currently participate in this program. However, given the number of entities, data, and legal requirements involved, implementing the MDRP can be complex and time-consuming.
The MDRP will reduce drug costs for Puerto Rico Medicaid, one of the most underfunded programs in the nation, by an estimated $160.4 million in just the first five years.
A partner to ASES since 2006, Abarca began serving as the program’s full-service PBM on May 1, 2022, following an unprecedented 10-day implementation. Implementation of the MDRP was completed earlier this year in a similarly smooth manner.
